Are antidepressants any good?

Dear Counselor

I ahve been having a very rough time recently. I lost my job and although i got another one it is not so good.
My doctor gave me antidepressants. I have been taking them for a year and I don't see they are making any difference.
I keep looking for a girlfriend but I don't get one.

What can I do?

Dear Gregorio,

Firstly, research shows that most people need counselling as well as antidepressants to overcome depression. And most doctors do not have the time to do more than prescribe antidepressants.
Certainly, if you have seen no improvement after a year it is time to find a counsellor.
In Australia, your doctor can refer you to a clinical psychologist for free or low cost counselling sessions. And the research also shows that most people find that when they combine counselling with antidepressants their situation does improve and they can continue their lives without using the drugs long term.
So, first thing, do find someone you feel good with whom knows what they are doing to give you some counselling.

Secondly, what you can do right now is to notice your body. Sit down and allow yourself to take a few deep breaths. Take note of the sensations in your body that you don't like - the ones that let you know you are having a rough time.
Perhaps there is a heavy feeling in the stomach or a pain in the heart area.
Usually, we avoid these feelings and so long as we avoid them they don't heal. It is like having a wound that is hidden from the air. It festers. This is what Eckhart Tolle calls the pain body. To heal it you need to simply give it attention, not following the unhappy thoughts that accompany it but simply feeling the physical sensations.

So just try sitting for a while and very gently allowing yourself to feel whatever it is you don't enjoy feeling. If it gets overwhelming, give yourself a break. Otherwise, just hang in there and see what happens. You may be surprised!
